چکیده

We present a scalable and reliable framework for Semantic Portals which is an extension of our existing SEAL approach. We illustrate the instantiation of our framework by the real-world example of a heterogeneous and distributed infrastructure of Semantic Portals, viz. the portal of our institute AIFB, the OntoWeb.org portals and the KM-Vision.org portal. The approach relies on the application of current semantic technologies whereby we still keep practical usability. Generally, we show that our approach can be used to build up Semantic Portals from scratch or to build up on existing portal infrastructures as a layered Semantic Portal on top. We present several modi for integration of multiple portals and show how we address practical issues like scalability and robustness of Semantic Portals.

SEAL-II - The Soft Spot between Richly Structured and Unstructured Knowledge

Recently, the idea of semantic portals on the Web or on the intranet has gained popularity. Their key concern is to allow a community of users to present and share knowledge in a particular (set of) domain(s) via semantic methods. Thus, semantic portals aim at creating high-quality access — in contrast to methods like information retrieval or document clustering that do not exploit any semantic...

specific information on the World Wide Web, thus helping their users find relevant, domain-specific information. The construction of intelligent access and the contribution of information to knowledge portals, however, remained an ad hoc task, requiring extensive manual editing and maintenance by the knowledge portal providers. To diminish these efforts, we use ontologies as a conceptual backbo...

SEAL - A Framework for Developing SEmantic Web PortALs

The core idea of the Semantic Web is to make information accessible to human and software agents on a semantic basis. Hence, web sites may feed directly from the Semantic Web exploiting the underlying structures for human and machine access. We have developed a generic approach for developing semantic portals, viz. SEAL (SEmantic portAL), that exploits semantics for providing and accessing info...

Semantic Methods and Tools for Information Portals

The paper describes a set of approaches for representing and accessing information within a semantically structured information portal, while offering the possibility to integrate own information. It discusses research performed within the project ‘Semantic Methods and Tools for Information Portals (SemIPort)’. In particular, it focuses on (1) the development of scalable storing, processing and...
